Divide for Fronts and Back
Work 32 (35, 38, 40) sts in pattern as established for Right Front and place these sts on a holder, BO next 4 (6, 8, 12) sts, work 68 (74, 80, 84) sts in pattern for Back and place these sts on a holder, BO next 4 (6, 8, 12) sts, work 32 (35, 38, 40) sts in pattern for Left Front.

Left Front

Continuing in pattern as established, dec 1 st at armhole edge every RS row 2 (4, 6, 6) times, then dec 1 st every other RS row 2 (1, 0, 0) times — 28 (30, 32, 34) sts. Work even until piece measures approx 17 ½" (18 ½", 19 ½", 20 ½") from CO edge, ending with a RS row.

Shape Neck
BO 4 sts at beg of next row, then dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 6 times — 18 (20, 22, 24) sts. Work even until piece measures 20" (21", 22", 23") from CO edge, ending with a RS row.

Shape Shoulder
Next row (WS): Work in pattern to last 6 (7, 8, 8) sts, W&T.
Next row: Work in pattern.

Work 21 (23, 25, 27) sts in pattern and place on holder for right shoulder, BO 18 for back neck, work 21 (23, 25, 27) sts in pattern for left shoulder. Continue on left shoulder only.

Work in pattern as established and at the same time, inc 1 st at beg and end of every 8th (8th, 6th, 6th) row 10 (10, 12, 14) times, working new sts in K3 P2 rib pattern — 58 (62, 66, 70) sts. Work even in pattern as established until piece measures approx 18" from CO edge, ending with a WS row.

Shape Sleeve Cap
BO 3 (5, 5, 5) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at beg and end of every row 5 (5, 4, 4) times, then every RS row 6 (6, 9, 9) times, then every row 6 (6, 4, 4) times — 18 sts rem. BO.

FINISHING

With RS together, join back to fronts at shoulders using 3 needle BO.
Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armholes.

Neck Band
With RS facing and smaller needle, pick up and K 23 sts along Right Front neck edge, 24 sts across back neck, then 23 sts along Left Front neck edge — 70 sts.
Next row (WS): K.
Row 1 (RS): K1, * K3, P2, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4.
Row 2 (WS): P4, * K2, P3, rep from * to last st, P1.
Rep last 2 rows 2 times more.
BO in pattern on RS.

Button Band
With RS facing and smaller needle, beg at upper edge of neckband on Left Front, pick up and K 78 (83, 88, 93) sts evenly along Left Front edge. K 1 row (WS).
Row 1 (RS): * K3, P2, rep from * to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 2 (WS): P3, * K2, P3, rep from * to end.
Rep last 2 rows 2 times more.
BO in pattern on RS.

Buttonhole Band
With RS facing and smaller needle, beg at lower edge of Right Front, pick up and K 78 (83, 88, 93) sts evenly along Right Front edge. K 1 row (WS).
Row 1 (RS): * K3, P2, rep from * to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 2 (WS): P3, * K2, P2, rep from * to end.
Row 3 (Buttonhole row): K3, {P2, K3} 0 (1, 0, 1) times, * make buttonhole over next 2 sts, K3, P2, K3, rep from * 6 (6, 7, 7) times more, make buttonhole over next 2 sts, K3.
Row 4: Same as row 2.
Row 5: Same as row 1.
Row 6: Same as row 2.

Belt
Using smaller needle, loosely CO 132 (148, 164, 180) sts. K 1 row.
Next row — Inc Row (RS): K2, m1, K to last 2 sts, m1, K2. K 1 row. Rep last 2 rows once more.
Next row — Buttonhole row (RS): K2, m1, K2, make buttonhole over next 2 sts, K to last 6 sts, make buttonhole over next 2 sts, K2, m1, K2. K 1 row.
Next row — Dec Row (RS): K2, SSK, K to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2. K 1 row. Rep last 2 rows once more. BO loosely.
Sew buttons to button band opposite buttonholes.


Try on sweater to determine button spacing for belt, then sew buttons to RS of belt at equal distances from ends. Note that both buttons are attached on the RS, so the front of the belt has a twist when worn, as shown in photograph.

 

 

Notes
1. Shoulders are shaped using short rows to facilitate easy and neat assembly.

2. Work Buttonhole: A) Sl the next 2 sts Pwise. Pass the first slipped st over the second to BO 1 st. Sl next st from LH needle to RH needle. Pass first st over second to BO 1 st. You have now bound off 2 sts. B) Sl the st that remains on RH needle back onto LH needle. Bottom of buttonhole is complete. C) Using backward loop method, CO 2 sts to RH needle. Top of buttonhole is complete.

3. Body is worked in one piece to armholes, then divided for back and fronts.
