With smaller needles and with two strands of yarn held together, CO 59 (63, 67, 71) sts.

Row 1 (WS): * P3, K1, rep from * to last 3 sts, end with P3.
Work in K3 P1 ribbing as established for 2", ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles.

Next row: K23 (25, 27, 29), work 16 sts from chart, K23 (25, 27, 29) — 62 (66, 70, 74) sts.

Continue working st st on each side with chart pattern in center until piece measures 15" (16", 16", 17") from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes
BO 5 (6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows — 52 (54, 58, 60) sts.
Continue without shaping, maintaining pattern as established, until piece measures 10" (10", 11", 11") from armhole bindoff, ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders
BO 16 (17, 18, 18), K20 (20, 22, 24), place these sts on holder for center back neck, BO rem 16 (17, 18, 18) sts.

 Front

Work same as for back until piece measures 7½" (7½", 8½", 8½") from armhole bindoff, ending with a WS row.

Shape Front Neck & Shoulders
Next row: K19 (20, 21, 21), attach a second ball of yarn, K14 (14, 16, 18), place these sts on holder for front neck, K rem 19 (20, 21, 21) sts. Working both sides at same time, dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 3 times. Work even until same length as back to shoulders, then BO rem sts.

 Sleeves

With smaller needles, CO 27 (27, 31, 31) sts.

Row 1 (WS): * P3, K1, rep from * to last 3 sts, end with P3.

Work in K3 P1 ribbing as established for 2", ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles.

Work in st st, inc 1 st at beg and end of every 4th row 8 (7, 8, 7) times, them every 6th row 7 (8, 8, 9) times — 57 (57, 63, 63) sts. Continue without shaping until piece measures 20" (21", 22", 22") from beg. BO.

 Finishing

Sew front to back at shoulders.

Collar
Join yarn at right shoulder seam. Using smaller 16" circular needle, K20 (20, 22, 24) sts from holder at back neck, pick up and K 9 sts down left front neck, K14 (14, 16, 18) sts from holder at front neck, pick up and K 9 sts along right front neck. 52 (52, 56, 60) sts on needle. Join and work in rounds. Work in K3 P1 ribbing for 1½". BO loosely.

Sew sleeves into armholes.

Sew side seams and sleeve seams.

Weave in ends and block gently to finished measurements.

Gauge
11 sts and 18 rows = 4" in st st with 2 strands of yarn using larger needles

Yarn is worked doubled throughout.
